Frost Farms in Bar Harbor

“Gardening shouldn’t be scary,” says Melissa Frost, owner of Frost Farms in Bar Harbor. “If you want to decorate your home and make it look nice, you don’t have to be a gardener. One pot by your front door can make you smile.”

That philosophy has guided Melissa since she opened Frost Farms ten years ago. A Boothbay native with a business degree from Maine Maritime Academy, she has built a destination that combines a full-service garden center, landscape design company, and seasonal farm store. Customers visit for annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees, but often stay to chat with Melissa, her close-knit team, and her chocolate lab, Rip, who has become part of the brand.

Beyond the gardens and greenhouses, Frost Farms is also known for its handmade balsam-fir wreaths, shipped to customers across the country each holiday season. Each one is made on-site, tying the fragrance of Maine to memories that travel well beyond the island. The farm’s online shop offers wreaths, ornaments, and even live plants for shipping, giving visitors a way to bring a living piece of Mount Desert Island home.

Recently, Melissa has added a farm store with locally raised meats and produce, creating new reasons for locals and travelers to stop in. Whether they come for sweet corn or a flowering hydrangea, her hope is the same: that people feel welcomed, inspired, and unafraid to try their hand at growing something beautiful.
