The Place Comes First. The Oyster Follows.
Ask Ryan McPherson what makes Glidden Point Oyster Farms special, and he won't start with the oysters.
He'll start with the river.
In Ryan's eyes, the Damariscotta River does the heavy lifting. Nutrient-rich algae from the Great Salt Bay feeds into the river with every tide, while surrounding ledges help create the conditions that allow oysters to thrive. Together, those natural elements create an environment unlike anywhere else in Maine—and one Ryan believed was worth building a life around.
Originally from Massachusetts, Ryan spent years working on the water before deciding oyster farming was where he belonged. In 2015, he purchased Glidden Point Oyster Farms and moved to Maine, drawn by the unique conditions of the Damariscotta River and the opportunity to build something for the long haul.
Today, Glidden Point harvests roughly two million oysters each year. The farm spans about 40 acres across the Damariscotta River and Scarborough, supplying restaurants, seafood markets, wholesalers, visitors to the farm, and customers around the country who order oysters shipped directly to their homes.
But Ryan is quick to remind people that oyster farming is, first and foremost, farming.
It demands patience, resilience, and a willingness to accept that nature doesn't always cooperate. Oysters can take years to reach harvest size, while changing weather, rainfall closures, labor shortages, and market conditions all become part of the job.
"You put so much in," he says, "and then you wait."
That perspective shapes more than the farm itself. It also shapes the experience Ryan hopes visitors have when they arrive at Glidden Point. Guests are invited to walk the farm, learn how oysters are grown, watch the team at work, and enjoy freshly harvested oysters overlooking the same waters where they were raised.
For Ryan, sharing that process is just as important as the final product. More than anything, he hopes people leave with a deeper appreciation for the Damariscotta River.
