Where Midcentury Meets Maine
Inside Lupine Home Co., a vintage silk scarf might sit beside a seaweed candle made in Maine. A midcentury chair upholstered in performance fabric faces stacks of design books and trays of fabric swatches. There are Liberty puzzles with hand-cut wooden pieces, vintage handbags, oyster-shaped throw pillows, and records spinning somewhere in the background.
“Our vibe is a fresh take on coastal New England style,” says co-owner Jennifer Finan. “Layered, warm, and collected, with a mix of old and new. Coastal without the cliche."
Jennifer and her husband, Will Finan, opened Lupine Home Co. on Main Street in Rockland in May, bringing together interior design services, furniture, vintage finds, clothing, art, and home décor under one roof. The couple moved to the Midcoast a few years ago from Connecticut, though Maine had long been part of both of their lives through family ties and summers spent here.
Jennifer studied design after initially pursuing music and marketing in college, while Will came from a background in finance and project management. Together, they built their interior design business before deciding it was time to establish their own storefront.
The result is a shop that feels polished yet approachable. There are high-end brands mixed with flea-market discoveries, locally made ceramics alongside custom upholstery samples, and a noticeable emphasis on how people actually live in their homes.
“All the upholstery, for the most part, is performance grade,” Jennifer says. “We have dogs. We have a one-year-old daughter. I try to think about how people really live.”
That philosophy also shapes the couple’s design work. Rather than imposing a signature look, Jennifer says she spends extensive time getting to know clients before making recommendations.
“I don’t ever want it to feel like, ‘That’s a Jennifer home,’” she says. “I want it to feel like the family that lives there.”
Will puts it more simply.
“The best designers,” he says, “listen to what people actually want.”
